Is the NBA not a bad guys' league?
I used to think the NBA was a bad guys' league and a league for jerks, but come to think of it...there's an awful lot of evidence to the contrary. I was referring not to how the NBA is a slimy business concerned only with money and fame (which is obvious), but to how arrogant teams dominated by rotten personalities tend to win championships and even become dynasties; but actually, that hasn't happened since the early 2000s. Until they became notorious for whining about calls and for letting their thugs (which they had only two of) get out of control, the San Antonio Spurs were hard-working and lacked arrogance, and I liked them. I had to admire the 2003-04 Detroit Pistons for being blue-collar and perfectly team-oriented--so unlike the Lakers, whom the Pistons humiliated in the Finals. The '05-06 Miami Heat? I didn't really care about them; they were inoffensive. The Cleveland Cavaliers' embarrments in 2007 and this season show that the NBA's anointing doesn't mean much. The 2008 Finals were like 2004 repeated. It looks like the Fakers will win the 2009 Finals, but jerks have to triumph sometime. So was I wrong to think the NBA is a league where the bad guys usually win?
