How did the Enlightenment "Age of Reason" represent a major change in Europe?

In my opinion the enlightenment did not do much in terms of action, the most it accomplished was to get people thinking about democracy, freedom and constitutions. The people who spoke the most were liberal nobles who enjoyed the inequality in society anyway, but it did influence some change in political leaders, who were known as enlightened despots, in some ways Napoleon was one and so was a ruler of Austria but can't rememberr his name.
